Seven games, each built around a money skill

Every screen here is from the live iOS app. Each game turns one money idea into decisions with consequences, and pays out coins for the leaderboard.

  • A Finance Quest question about impulse buying, answered correctly with Removing the triggers

    Finance Quest

Ten timed questions, 20 seconds each. Score 7 out of 10 to bank the coins.

  • Flashcard Frenzy halfway through, with three term and definition pairs matched and the Asset card turned over

    Flashcard Frenzy

Flip cards to match each money term with its meaning, against the clock.

  • Budgeting Blitz with $1,970 of the budget left and a $120 pair of sneakers to spend on or skip

    Budgeting Blitz

A month's income and 15 expenses to spend on or skip, aiming for a 50/30/20 split.

  • Credit Climb with the score rising to 670 after paying a credit card bill in full, and the reason explained

    Credit Climb

Ten decisions move a credit score up or down, and every answer says why.

  • A Financial Dilemmas round comparing buying a $70 video game with a $15 a month game subscription

    Financial Dilemmas

Would you rather? Two choices a round, with the money behind each one explained.

  • Budget Challenge saving for a weekend getaway, $175 saved and on track, deciding whether to join friends for bubble tea

    Budget Challenge

Pick a savings goal, then get through each week's bills, gifts and temptations.

  • The start of Investment Voyage, with $10,000 to invest over 12 months and a Start Investing button

    Investment Voyage

$10,000 to invest over 12 months, reading the news to spot what moves the market.

Building blocks

What's inside Finly

The parts many apps need, built and running in this one.

  • Passwordless sign-in

A one-time code by email, so there is no password to forget.

  • Reminders

A daily check-in, and a nudge before a streak runs out.

  • Monthly leaderboard

Coins from lessons and games, ranked every month, with past months kept.

  • Coins, streaks and trophies

Rewards for every lesson and game, and trophies on the profile.

  • Usage dashboard

Sign-ups, active users and store downloads for the Finly team, updated daily.

  • Account deletion

Delete an account from inside the app, as both stores require.

What we built

  1. The web app and all seven games

One backend for coins, trophies and a monthly leaderboard, and the web app at finlyofficial.com: lessons with a quiz at the end, a glossary, Economics 101 and all seven games.

The Arcade on finlyofficial.com in a desktop browser, with the beginner and intermediate games in rows
  2. Lessons that go deeper

Dig Deeper panels inside the lessons, with seven calculators, scenarios, myth busters and action steps.

  3. The iOS and Android app

The Flutter app on the same backend, with the lessons, calculators and games from the web.

  4. Live in both stores

A release pipeline for both stores, then App Store and Google Play review. Finly's first round of feedback shipped the day after it arrived.

  5. A usage dashboard for the Finly team

Sign-ups, active users, lesson and game opens, and App Store and Google Play numbers, synced every day.

  6. A partner page for Finance Forward

A Finance Forward partner page, on the web and in the app.

The brief

Finly came to us with a clear idea: seven games that teach money, from budgeting and credit to saving and investing, inside a loop of coins and a monthly leaderboard that brings people back. They wanted it on iPhone, Android and the web.

One backend for phone and web

We built the web app first, with every game playable there by the end of March, then the Flutter app for iOS and Android on the same backend. Each game reads its questions, scenarios and stocks from its own table, so the Finly team writes and tunes the content from the dashboard without waiting for a release.

Since launch

The work did not stop at the stores. Finly’s first round of feedback shipped the day after it arrived, and we have kept adding since: a usage dashboard for the Finly team, and a partner page for Finance Forward.

In their words

Working with Zovia Studio was a delightful experience. They helped us all throughout the app, and anytime there was a bug or any other problem, they were quick to fix it. They also have great communication: anytime we had questions, they would respond within hours. We couldn't wish for anyone else to develop the app.
